Last time this happened "Carrie" was tops in the box office and "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" was topping the music charts. Ups and downs to the situation. Less business from the US in Canada (not as cheap for Hollywood to film here). Not good for exporters or the manufacturing sector in Canada.

Good for Canadians travelling south. Canadian NHL teams, the Jays (MLB) and Raptors (NBA) get a break as revenues are in $Cdn, while payrolls are $US. I doubt teams will reduce ticket prices. Price of books! Price listed on covers are 20% higher in Canada (publishers and retailers, will be making a nice little profit).

5 years ago, the canuck buck was worth 63 cents US, this morning it's been flirting with parity (hitting it, backing off currently around .9985). It'll be interesting to see how long this ride lasts. Once the US economy picks up again, I suspect the $Cdn will drop again. Hmmm, although I still have a year or so left on my subscription, I should consider renewing my Astronomy Magazine subscription (paid in $US), sooner than later.

Except on the NYS Thruway, where they still have the dumb-ass "Canadian currency discounted 20%" signs at the toll booths.

I'll be going to visit my folks in Toronto for Christmas this year. Wife and I won't be spending a dime if we can help it. While the money may be at parity, the cost of goods more than likely is not. Sad

Well, yay! I should be able to use my Candian coins without getting any dirty looks! Laughing

I grew up in Michigan, where it was common to have Canadian nickles, dimes, pennies, and especially quarters mixed in with your change, and it was fair currency. When I migrated to Maryland, some of my Canadian change came along, and trying to use it there just didn't work! Now back in Minnesota, they are worth something again. I love these border states!

Fisher... the trip to the Falls maybe out... It was cheaper to go when I left the area... LOL

I can remember working in the mall (that would be the Summit Mall... before it became... something entirely different....) at Christmas, and having busloads of Canadians come in and buy the place out. Of course, this was before we had nifty scanners and things like that and we had to calculate the exchange rate by hand.... at the time, I think it was $.70 to the US dollar....

I wonder how this will be effected by the Fed's rate cut. I think they are trying to keep inflation low, which means the value of the dollar should drift upwards, I think.

A rate cut would tend to have the opposite effect. The reasoning seems to be, they can cut rates because inflation is under control. If inflation picks up again, the likely response will be to raise rates (or at least stop lowering them) for a while. Although Bernanke may be a bit less hawkish about it than Greenspan was...

Er, maybe that's where I got confused. I heard Greenspan on 60 minutes talking about how inflation is the major worry for the future, so I assumed that's what the Fed was worried about too. I didn't think it through.

It could be a difference of opinion between the two. Note the "Helicopter Ben" reference:

Although if he does the helicopter drop while over my back garden, I don't mind so much...
