Chief justice hospitalized after falling on dock
| Quote: | NBC News reported that Roberts suffered a seizure while playing golf in January 1993. He was not allowed to drive for several months and took the bus to work, news agencies reported at the time.
The White House called the incident an "isolated, idiosyncratic seizure." |
Not obvious whether the White House statement refers to present or past seizure.
| Quote: | | Roberts, 52, was taken by ambulance to the Penobscot Bay Medical Center, where he underwent a "thorough neurological evaluation, which revealed no cause for concern," Arberg said in a statement. |
Well dinkety-boo, if it wuz me, I'd be at least mildly concerned if I had even one seizure. A second one would definitely make me sit up and wonder just a bit.
As an informal poll: how many seizures must you have until they become a cause for concern? _________________ The Devil offered me power, but I told him I preferred aperture. |

I guess I missed some good dialog here!
My answer: one. I was having a series of symptoms in high school that were never considered linked to seizures. Until I had a seizure in my sleep. That cued the doctors in! Haven't had one since. One is way too many for anyone to have. _________________ Too bad ignorance isn't painful.

From my time back at NIH I will say that any seizure is a cause for concern, whatever the cause. TWO seizures are evidence for epilepsy.
And again, listen to the spin whirring gently in the background. _________________ The Devil offered me power, but I told him I preferred aperture. |

That bit about epilepsy was mentioned in the article I read. I think when they say there is no cause for concern, they mean he doesn't have cancer and it wasn't a stroke. Very bad choice of words however. _________________ "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Philip K. Dick

Bad choice of words, indeed. 'Benign idopathic' just means they cannot localize a cause. And the type of seizure is not given (and may not be known): absence, myoclonic, tonic/clonic, etc. But it does suggest a hot spot in the brain, and the likelyhood of recurrance increases with additional seizures.
But the appearance of hastily sweeping things under the rug grates a bit. If Roberts has a mild eiplepsy, it's no big deal at all, there are just certain things he would have to be more careful about, like a diabetic. I spent a couple of years at NINCDS and know that unless there are other neurological problems, and unless the condition progresses to a point where it significantly interferes with normal routines, it's just something to adjust to and possibly treat. Epilepsy has no effect on intelligence or intellection except during and immediately after a seizure. _________________ The Devil offered me power, but I told him I preferred aperture. |
