Illness Brought On By Crashed Meteorite
In Peru. Very intriguing. _________________ "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." Philip K. Dick

I have two thoughts.
First, that the heat of the impact dispersed something from the ground it hit...
| Quote: | | "Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said. |
Second, is a little bit of mass hysteria / psychosomatic illness. Every once in a while there is a case like that; it seems most common in elementary schools. Some kid will get sick, and suddenly 30 or 40 kids are all sick. They'll run a bunch of tests for contaminants and find nothing. _________________ Militant agnositic - I don't know and you don't either. |

Oh, like you could handle the truth.
Now, just take a look at the end of this device...

Headaches, vomiting, strange odor? Could be that it contained some toxic compounds that are now spreading around as dust. Or they could have been created durin the impact.
(Osmium tetroxide is the one that's coming to my mind - volatile solid, smells like ozone. Probably too toxic to explain this though. On the other hand, some of those symptoms sound like what you'd get from toxic gases like ozone or nitric oxide... Could be that the heat just generated a lot noxious fumes, which wind [patterns have prevented from dissipating fast.) |

The bad odor with nausia & headaches could also be due to sulfurdioxide (rotten egg smell) gas released by the impact. The same symptoms occured when that volcano suddenly popped out of a farmers field in Mexico back in 1947. I'm probably wrong but it's a possibility. _________________ Lighten up, I'm Here For The Fun Of It

A lengthier article here:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20838944/.
I'll wait for further study. It may very well be some sort of chemical reaction, but I'll wait to see if the sulfer is from the meteorite itself, or from some ground pocket and released by the impact. |

Are they sure it was a meteorite and not something manmade? I suspect an errant nuclear warhead would have similar results (but so might an RTG). The crater might be caused by detonation of the high explosives at impact. A properly safed and unarmed warhead would not cause a sizable nuclear reaction in the event of an accident such as this (since the pit would not be at the geometric center of the explosion/implosion, which would probably be asymmetrical in such an event anyways). Radiation poisoning from pulverized Pu and tritium and toxicity from Pu and other chemicals might result in symptoms similar to those described. If the pit stayed somewhat intact and is laying in groundwater, the water might act as a neutron moderator and cause some fissioning to occur to heat the water to boiling.
I wonder what NORAD has to say about the meteor's track. It might be a lost warhead from a FOBS (Fractional Orbit Bombardment System). _________________ awaiting signature 2.0... |

JPax, you've been playing with those kids over at GLP again. We've told you not to go there as you might come down with RWS!

Hey now, at least I make it clear that I'm speculating. Those goofs actually believe such things without evidence. _________________ awaiting signature 2.0... |

I saw a report on the news yesterday and they said that experts had tested the air and found no trace of noxious chemicals or radioactivity. Apparently I wasn't the only one thinking about radioactives. _________________ awaiting signature 2.0... |
